MADRID, apart from being a well known city for interesting nigth-life city and culture offers, it is one of the best places for birdwatching in Spain. Why go further, it´s possible to do some amazing trips with spectacular birds and sites.

In a Northern European birdwatching context, Spain in general, and Madrid in particular, offers a large variety of the typically classified "Spanish species", relatively abundant and of great interest for birdwatchers and twichers.

Margaret, Anchorage, Alaska: On January, I had the opportunity to take a full day birdwatching tour with Aitor around Madrid. In only eight hours, I saw 38 new species of birds, even though I have birded in Europe before. Aitor was a wonderful guide! He picked me up from my hotel and drove us out to several different habitat types around the countryside about Madrid. He knew just where it was best to see certain species of birds and was very good at stalking and listening for birds so that we could get close enough to see them well and observe their behavior. We saw about 50 species of birds, including everything from small forest birds to huge soaring raptors. One highlight for me was when we saw about seventy great bustards in two different flocks and even watched them soar into view from up and over a hill to settle in a plowed field to feed. Another highlight was watching Spanish Imperial eagles, then seeing them joined by handsome griffon vultures and an enormous black vulture, all soaring right around us and over us! Amazing! This not disappoint me, we had a fantastic time with him, and we got to see most of the birds described on his webpage as he will go that little bit further to make sure your trip exceeds expectations no matter the weather. Sean Grace, USA: We booked a day's birdwatching with Aitor when we visited Madrid for a long weekend last year. My mate has been 'twitching' in the UK before and we wanted to see something of the countryside around Madrid and I was a birdwatching novice. We spotted lots of different species, including Raptors, Buzzards, amazing flocks of goldfinches turning gold and brown as they went one way then the other in flight, azure-winged magpies, and then the bird everyone wants to see - the Spanish Imperial Eagle. Incredible! Aitor was very informative and really knows his birds. He speaks English, is a really friendly and even bought us a beer to round the day off! (though I can't promise that's part of the tour!). A great day and really good value for money and we would definitely do it again. I'd recommend it to anyone - whether you are a twticher or a novice, and it was so great to get a feel for the wildlife and countryside around Madrid on a citybreak.

Rebecca Buck, NJ: I was in Madrid, Spain for a brief courier trip, and I contacted Aitor to see if he could accompany me on a birding trip on October. He agreed, and despite the bad weather of a rainy day, we set out to look for birds at sites off the M50 near Madrid. It was a wonderful day, with Azure Magpies, Great Bustards, raptors and the beautiful Blue Rockthrush. We stayed fairly near the city and yet saw a good variety of habitats and birds. He knows his stuff, and can find the good birds!

It was our first trip to Spain and we only dared to hope for the big 3, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Eurasian Black Vulture and the Griffon Vulture, but Aitor had all three in our sights in one afternoon! BIRDING IN MONFRAGUE

During the FIO (Extremadura Birdwatching Fair) which took place in Monfrague National Park (Extremadura) last weekend (2-4 March), Mario Ramos and I (Aitor), apart being interviewed on the radio program Gente Viajera (listen the interview), we had the oportunity of going birdwatching during two fantastic ornithological field trips.

Durante la FIO (Feria Internacional de Turismo Ornitológico) que tuvo lugar en el Parque Nacional de Monfragüe (Extremadura) el pasado fin de semana (2-4 Marzo), Mario Ramos y yo, aparte de tener la oportunidad de ser entrevistados en directo en el programa de radio Gente Viajera de Onda Cero (escucha la entrevista), realizamos dos preciosas excursiones ornitológicas con base en Villareal de San Carlos.

Route Villareal San Carlos - Monfrague castle

There is an exceptionally walk of about 11 km from Villareal to the castle, but at midday it is a long and hot experience. So we chose to go by car to the Salto del Gitano (see picture below) to start closer to the castle (4 km).

Route Villarreal San Carlos - Mirador del Tíetar (March 4th)

On Sunday we did another field trip, by car and on foot, going first to the Embalse Torrejón-Tietar, finishing in the Mirador del Tietar. After lunch we continued around the National Park. It was then that we saw the unexpectedly Purple Swamphen, Great white Egret and 10 Black-shouldered kites in a row.

El Domingo realizamos otra excursión, una parte en coche y otra andando. Fuimos primero al Embalse de Torrejón-Tíetar, acabando en el Mirador del Tiétar. Allí aprovechamos para comer y continuamos bordeando Monfragüe, y fue entonces cuando nos encontramos las especies que más nos sorprendieron, como fue el Calamón, la Garceta Grande y 10 Elanios Azules juntos.

El Pardo Natural Reserve, set in the wooded parkland known as the Monte de El Pardo, an area of some 16,000 hectares to the North of Madrid, is the Palace of La Zarzuela, residence of Their Majesties The King and Queen of Spain.

The Monte de El Pardo is a wooded area situated in the north of Madrid City. It has a National Patrimonio (unfortunately is closed for public visits) and also has a Natural Park Status, with abundant diversity in vegetal and fauna, including protected birds as:

En un contexto nor-europeo de observación de aves, España en general, y Madrid en particular, ofrecen una gran diversidad de especies, incluidas las conocidas como "Especies Españolas", debido a su abundancia (dentro de su escasez) únicamente en nuestro país, como pueden ser el Buitre Negro, Cigüeña Negra, Aguila Imperial, Buitre Leonado, Calamón, Sisón, Avutarda, Elanio Azul, Pechiazul, Rabilargo...

The best mediterranean forest in Madrid

(El mejor monte mediterraneo madrileño)

This area of South-west Madrid has a ZEPA status (Especial Bird Protected Area). It´s known the presence of 8 breeding couples of Black Stork inside this area, and also Spanish Eagle, Black Vulture...

Se ha especulado desde hace algún tiempo la presencia del Lince Ibérico (Lynx pardinus) en ésta zona de Madrid, catalogada como ZEPA (Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves). Sea cierto o no, ésta zona es, junto a El Monte de El Pardo, la mayor "mancha" de bosque mediterráneo de la provincia de Madrid.

After the politic stuff about the M-501 road which will be an ecologic disaster for this area, some no-naturalist people said the there was no evidence of Linx, just "cat", etc. In this area is possible to see very important and relevant worldwide birds (see below)
Después de la ya "eterna" polémica de la carretera M-501 y su desdoblamiento, dónde se quiere especular con que los restos fecales del lince eran de "gato", o que muere mucha gente "especialmente" en esta carretera, o que si la abuela fuma.....lo que verdaderamente se proponen los que goviernan Madrid, es más espacio "natural" dónde construir edificios y llevar más gente...total: afectaría irreparablemente a ésta zona, protegida.

MADRID SOUTH-EAST MARSHES

The South-east marshes of Madrid are mainly bordering the Jarama river, and also includes the Velilla de San Antonio marshes, Laguna del Campillo de Rivas-Vaciamadrid and the Laguna de San Juan.

San Antonio Marshes

The San Antonio marshes are included the South-eastern Regional Park, bordering almost in line the Manzanares and Jarama rivers.

Las Lagunas de San Antonio forman parte del Parque Regional del Sureste, que discurre casi linealmente entorno a los ejes de los ríos Manzanares y Jarama.

In Velilla are situated a group of marshes between the city, the Jarama river and the close chipping areas around Rivas.

En Velilla encontramos un conjunto de lagunas que se sitúan entre el nucleo urbano, el río Jarama y los cercanos cantiles (yesíferos) de Rivas-Vaciamadrid. Estos humadales no son naturales, surgen como consecuencia del aumento de la actividad extractiva de áridos de la zona.

In Velilla de San Antonio marshes can be seen more than one hundred different birds.
En las lagunas y humedales de Velilla de San Antonio se distinguen más de un centenar de aves diferentes.

Un posible recorrido sería: Laguna El Raso, Laguna Picón de los Conejos y acabar en la Laguna El Soto. En las próximidades de Velilla, pasado el pueblo, llegamos al Humedal de Miralrío, cercano a la carretera de La Poveda.

Todas las lagunas tienen agua todo el año, ya que reciben agua del río Jarama, y también esporadicamente del agua de lluvia, debido a que el nivel freático está por encima de ellas.

Entre las aves nidificantes de notable valor:

- Garza Imperial (Ardea purpurea) - Purple Heron
- Avetorillo (Ixobrychus minutus) - Little Bittern
- Aguilucho lagunero (Circus aeruginosus) - Marsh Harrier
- Bigotudo (Panarus biarmicus) - Bearded Tit
- Calamón Común (Porphyrio porphyrio) - Purple Swamphen

En invierno, muchas aves utilizan estas lagunas como área de invernada, reposo y alimentación, además de dormidero. Podrían contemplarse:

- Malvasía cabeciblanca - White Headed duck

Proposed Trip
Senda propuesta:

Paseo relajante que parte de la Laguna de El Raso, llegamos en unos 1.5 km hasta el Picón de los conejos, y de 3km más hasta la laguna de El soto. El tiempo estimado contando las paradas para observar la fauna y los ecosistemas es de alrededor de 2-3.30 h) Será un bonito paseo, la mayor parte al cobijo de las sombras de sauces, chopos y algún fresno.
